Townson, fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, 1737-1750, was later Rector of Blithfield, Staffs., from 1749-1759, and Malpas, Cheshire, from 1752; Bagot and his brother, 1st Lord Bagot, had been pupils of Townson at Oxford; Walter Bagot was later Rector of Blithfield; their letters discuss family and friends, poetry, classical literature, and the political news of the day; Townson's letter of 1791 Nov 17 consists of a criticism of a translation of the Iliad made by William Cowper (1731-1800).
